IOWA CITY — The 2008 John Mackey Award watch list has been released and University of Iowa senior Tony Moeaki is on the list. Given annually to the best collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and announced in mid-December. Iowa’s Dallas Clark won the award in 2002.
Moeaki, a 6-4, 255-pounder from Wheaton, IL, is listed as a senior, but is expected to be granted an additional year following a season-ending injury in the fourth game last year. He has caught 33 career passes for 422 yards and six touchdowns. He caught a career high eight passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns against Syracuse last year.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
