EAST LANSING, MI – – The Iowa Hawkeyes women’s golf team is in ninth place at the Mary Fossum Invitational after finishing the first day of play Saturday. Following the first two rounds, the Golden Flashes of Kent State are leading the tournament with a two-stroke lead over Michigan State. Iowa trails sixth place by just four strokes.
Senior Tyrette Metzendorf (+4, 148) led the Hawkeyes today after carding an even 72 her first round. She goes into the final round on Sunday tied for ninth place. Fellow senior Becky Quinby had a good day on the links as well, finishing her first 36 holes tied for 18th place (+8, 152).
Junior Alison Cavanaugh is tied for 51st place after firing a 171 (+17). Sophomore Laura Cilek and freshman Chelsea Harris are among those tied for 59th place (+20, 164). Brianna Coopman, who traveled to compete as an individual, finished the day shooting a 171 (+27) and is in 74th place.
The tournament will draw to a close Sunday when the 12 competing teams tee off at 7:30 a.m. (CT) for the final 18 holes. Iowa looks to improve on its scores today and move up in standings tomorrow.
