IOWA CITY, Iowa – Greene in the first or second? King in Round 3? What about Kroul and Bruggeman and Fletcher? How about Olsen?
The National Football League will stage its annual draft Saturday and Sunday, and that means a anxious weekend for several former University of Iowa football standouts who have spent the days since Iowa’s 31-10 drubbing of South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl making final preparations to “play on Sundays.”
At the top of the list of former-Hawkeyes-to-be-NFL-ers includes 2008 Doak Walker Award winner Shonn Green; 2008 Big Ten Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year Mitch King, King’s sidekick for the last four years, Matt Kroul; defensive back Bradley Fletcher; offensive lineman Rob Bruggeman, wide receiver Andy Brodell; tight end Brandon Myers; and offensive lineman Seth Olsen.
The experts believe Greene will be the first Hawkeye to be selected this year. When that happens, it will mark the 32nd consecutive season that Iowa will have had a student-athlete chosen in the NFL Draft.

Iowa’s draft history is long. Dick Crayne’s selection in the first round of the 1936 NFL Draft by Brooklyn marks its start and it continues through last year’s event when Charles Godfrey (Round 3, Carolina), Kenny Iwebema (Round 4, Arizona) and Mike Humpal (Round 6, Pittsburgh) had their names called.
