April 26, 2009

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – – The women’s golf team shot a season best 305 in the fourth round to secure a fifth place finish at the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, IN. The Hawkeyes’ fifth placing is the highest at the women’s golf Big Ten Championships since 1995 when Iowa finished fourth. Iowa had a four round total of 1,264, and Purdue continued to hold on today to take first.

Tyrette Metzendorf led the Hawkeyes with 303 which secured her the third place medal. Becky Quinby also finished in the top-20 individuals with 318. Freshman Chelsea Harris shot 326 and Laura Cilek carded 331. Lauren Forbes and Alison Cavanaugh had four round totals of 332 and 344, respectively.

The Hawkeyes shed 22 strokes off their score between the first and final rounds of the tournament. The 18-hole score of 305 is the best single round total of the spring season, “We kept improving every day, but we had to play through some tough conditions this weekend. It was windy and the course was wet which really didn’t set up well for the girls, but we just held on and continued to improve, stay mentally tough, and every day we just kept moving up,” said Head Coach Kelly Crawford.

Iowa recorded its first top-five finish in the Big Ten Championships since the 1994-95 season. Three of the teams in the top-five are currently in the top-25 national rankings according to Golfweekly.com-No.11 Purdue, No.20 Michigan State, and No.25 Ohio State. 14 years ago…the Hawkeyes were coached by Diane Thomason and finished in fourth place with 1,282, today third-year head coach Kelly Crawford was happy to hear about her team’s standing, “I wasn’t sure where we would finish in a field with three nationally ranked teams, I’m very proud of the girls, and now to find out it’s the best in this many years is icing on the cake.”
