DES MOINES, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Drake Wednesday in Des Moines, IA, 4-3. The 55th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 5-1 on the season with the victory at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

“It was a close, hard-fought match,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “The Knapp Tennis Center is a very tough place to place. Overall, it was a good win.”

The Hawkeyes, 3-1 away from Iowa City, won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. At the No. 3 position, Garret Dunn and Reinoud Haal defeated Jonathan Hadash and Cesar Bracho, 8-3. The duo of Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos then clinched the point with a victory at the No. 2 spot. The pair defeated Guilherme Marsiglia and Jean Erasmus, 9-7.

After a Hawkeye loss at No. 2 singles tied the match, McGeorge defeated Erasmus 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot to give the Hawkeyes a 2-1 advantage. Haal and Vasos then won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to clinch the match. Haal defeated Bracho, 7-5, 6-2, and Vasos defeated Marsiglia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The Black and Gold, winners of five straight overall and three straight on the road, return to action Sunday. Iowa will host DePaul at 2 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
