24 Hawkeyes to Watch (2009-10 season)
IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa women’s tennis players Merel Beelen and Sonja Molnar have been selected to compete in the doubles tournament at the 2010 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. Iowa’s No. 1 doubles team received one of 16 at-large bids to compete in the 32-team field May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, GA.
The duo has posted a 16-3 record and is currently ranked 14th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Beelen and Molnar become Iowa’s first doubles team to advance to the NCAA Tournament since Toni Neykova and Shera Wiegler competed in 2000.

“Merel and Sonja have had a great year,” said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “They’ve beaten some very good teams and proved that they belong in the tournament. I’m particularly thrilled for Merel. She’s enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in her final season after suffering through what had been an injury laden career. As happy as we are for the doubles team, all eyes are on Boise State right now and advancing through the team championships.”
The 21st-ranked Hawkeyes will travel to South Bend, IN for first-round action in the 2010 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships after receiving an at-large bid Tuesday afternoon. The Hawkeyes (17-6) will face Boise State (22-5) Friday, May 14 at 9 a.m. (CT) at the Courtney Tennis Center on the campus of Notre Dame.
