Three 'Colorful' Days Scheduled at Kinnick

Aug. 26, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fans of the nationally ranked University of Iowa football team again this season will be invited to add a little – actually, a lot – of color to historic Kinnick Stadium on three different Saturdays and, by so doing, provide the Hawkeyes a boost of energy.

The first of the Hawkeyes’ three “colorful events” is the season opener Saturday, Sept. 4, against Eastern Illinois. Consistent with recent history, the season opener is National Varsity Club Day and, again this season, falls the day after the City of Coralville’s annual FRYfest. In honor of both activities, the season opener has again been designated the 2010 season’s “Be Bold, Wear Gold” game.

Fans can purchase the official “Be Bold, Wear Gold” t-shirt by clicking HERE.

The official “Be Bold, Wear Gold” t-shirt is also available at all Official Iowa Hawk Shop locations, the North Dodge and Waterfront locations of Hy-Vee Food Stores in Iowa City, the Hy-Vee Drug Store on Blairsferry Road in Cedar Rapids, Gameday Iowa in Coralville, Scheels in the CoralRidge Mall, Iowa Book and Supply in Iowa City, and UniversiTees locations in Iowa City and Cedar Falls.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, Iowa will stage its annual “Blackout Saturday” game. Fans of the UI are invited to turn Kinnick Stadium into a sea of ghoulish black when Iowa entertains Big Ten Conference rival Michigan State on Halloween.

Lastly, the newest addition to the colorful lineup is “Black and Gold Spirit Day” when Iowa opens its 2010 Big Ten Conference season with a nationally televised primetime date with the Nittany Lions of Penn State. “Black and Gold Spirit Day” invites fans to wear black or gold depending upon the section of Kinnick Stadium in which they sit.

Official “Black and Gold Spirit Day” t-shirts featuring the signature of Kirk Ferentz will go on sale later this month, however, purchased can be made in advance by clicking HERE. Fans should note that $1 from each “Black and Gold Spirit day” t-shirt sold will be donated to the Iowa Children’s Hospital.

“The `Spirit’ game is an idea borne from discussions among our football staff. It could look spectacular both in the stadium and on television. Obviously, it’s a big night for the Hawkeyes and it’s the UI’s opportunity once again to shine on the biggest stage of all – primetime national television,” said Rick Klatt, associate athletics director for external affairs.

“We’re optimistic Hawk fans will be excited about the opportunity to once again provide the team some big-time support and make a statement on national television about how it’s great to be a Hawkeye.”
