KENT, Ohio – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost at Kent State Sunday in Kent, OH, 3-1. The match was played at Murphy-Mellis Field.
The Golden Flashes (3-3) struck first, scoring at the 2:53 mark in the first half off a penalty corner. In the 22nd minute of play, Kent State added another goal to increase its lead to 2-0. That would remain the score at halftime.
In the early minutes of the second half, the Hawkeye offense applied pressure, earning a penalty corner and three shot attempts in the first few minutes of action. Iowa was unable to capitalize though, and the scored remained 2-0.
At the 45:05 mark, Kent State added another goal, pushing its lead to 3-0. Iowa answered moments later off a corner. Jessica Barnett continued her strong play as she scored to cut Kent State’s lead to 3-1. The goal was assisted by Sarah Pergine and Geena Lesiak. The Hawkeyes were unable to add to their offensive total in the remaining minutes and Kent State came away with a 3-1 victory.
Iowa (1-5) returns to action Sept. 18 in Iowa City. The Black and Gold will face Ball State at Grant Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
