Oct. 29, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team has earned a top-25 preseason national ranking by the Associated Press. The Hawkeyes are ranked 22nd in the poll, released today, Oct. 29.

This is the fifth time Iowa has appeared in the preseason AP poll. Iowa was ranked in the 1994 (13th), 1995 (19th), 1996 (sixth) and 1997 (12th) preseason lists. The preseason AP poll was created in 1994 while the in-season AP poll has been in existence since 1976.

Four of Iowa’s opponents, including two Big Ten teams, are also in the preseason AP top-25: Ohio State (seventh), North Carolina (15th), Iowa State (20th) and Michigan State (25th).

This is the second preseason ranking the Hawkeyes have garnered this season. Lindy’s Sports tabbed Iowa 19th in its preseason rankings. The Hawkeyes were picked second in the Big Ten by both the league media and coaches at Thursday’s Big Ten Basketball Media Day.

Iowa opens the 2010-11 season Nov. 7 with an exhibition against Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m.
