WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Iowa volleyball team fell 3-0 to Purdue tonight inside Halloway Gym. Iowa received a team-high nine kills from Mallory Husz and 16 digs from freshman Bethany Yeager, but Purdue was able to control both sides of the net en route to a straight set victory. The Boilermakers piled up eight blocks and attacked at a .359 clip.

“Purdue passed and served better than we did tonight,” said Head Coach Sharon Dingman. “They were also stronger at the net. Tonight was similar to the Ohio State match in that we were beat in every phase of the game.”

Purdue used a nine point run to seize control of the opening set en route to a 25-15 win. Husz and Tiffany Nilges contributed three kills apiece in the frame, but Purdue used five services aces and a .324 attack percentage to grab a 1-0 match lead.

Purdue jumped to leads of 3-0 and 5-1 in the second set before Husz attacked with a pair of kills to end the early runs. Becky Walters and Megan Eskew then added a pair of kills to keep Iowa within striking distance, but an 8-2 Boilermaker run propelled Purdue to a 25-16 win. Walters led Iowa with three kills and Paige Stevens dished nine assists in the frame.

Purdue used more of the same to claim the third set, 25-13. Down 2-0, Iowa forced a Boilermaker error and received kills from Rachael Bedell and Megan Eskew to grab its first lead of the match, 3-2, but Purdue answered with a pair of points to reclaim a 5-4 advantage. Kills from Husz and Eskew would later tie the frame at 5-5 and 6-6, but a seven point Boilermaker run help Purdue stake a 13-6 lead and move on to a 25-13 win.

The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow night when they face Indiana at 6 p.m. (CT) inside University Gym. The match will be broadcast live from Bloomington, Ind., on KXIC (AM 800).
