Tempe, Ariz. — The University of Iowa softball team had its two Saturday games at the Littlewood Classic cancelled when heavy rain showers hit the Tempe area. After the rain stopped, the field at Farrington Stadium was deemed unplayable, as too much rain had saturated the field.
The Hawkeyes were leading Illinois State, 1-0, in the top of the third inning when the game was halted. Senior Chelsey Carmody connected on a first inning home run to dead center field, and sophomore Chelsea Lyon had three strikeouts in two innings in the circle.
With the cancelations, Iowa finished with a perfect 2-0 record on the weekend. The Hawkeyes opened the tournament by run-ruling Idaho State, 11-3, on Friday. The squad then rallied for an 8-7 win over Seattle University.
The Hawkeyes return to action next weekend in Fort Myers, Fla., at the Moe’s Blue and Green Invite. Iowa opens the tournament with games against Albany and Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 25.
