June 21, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Erik Sowinski has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America track and field team. The announcement was made today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Sowinski, an integrative physiology major from Waukesha, Wis., was named to the All-America third team following his runner-up performance in the 800 meters at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. A 2012 Big Ten indoor champion, Sowinski owns or shares seven school records and is a three-time academic All-Big Ten honoree.

His school record 800 meters performance (1:45.90) in the NCAA finals earned him an automatic berth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. He’ll compete in the first round June 22 at 7:20 p.m. (CT) at Hayward Field on the campus of Oregon.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a GPA of 3.30, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
