Hawkeyes Change Directions Following Bye Week

THIS WEEK
The Universtiy of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams will both be in action this weekend. The Hawkeye women’s team will make the trip to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday, while the men will compete at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.

WISCONSIN ADIDAS INVITATIONAL
The Wisconsin adidas Invitational will take place at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. Eleven Hawkeyes will compete at the event. Those athletes include Kayla Beattie, Nicole Benson, Lisa Gordon, Kelsey Hart, Courtney Martin, Shannon Maser, Lena Placzek, Megan Ranegar, Cindy Saliba, Mareike Schrulle, and Jocelyn Todd. The 6,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

PRE-NATIONAL INVITATIONAL
The Pre-National Invitational will be held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Twelve men will compete at the event. Those athletes include Jon Michael Brandt, Sam Chaney, Sam Fourman, Anthony Gregorio, Nick Holmes, Daniel Huff, Kevin Lewis, Nate Lonsway, Cameron Rieger, Taylor Soltys, Caleb Wilfong, and Ben Witt. The 8,000-meter event is scheduled to begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (ET).

IN THE RANKINGS
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional rankings. The women’s team is ranked sixth in the Midwest Region, while the men are ranked 10th.

BIG TEN FOES
The Hawkeye women’s team will face nine Big Ten foes on Friday. They include, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 14 Penn State, No. 27 Minnesota, No. 29 Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio State, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Indiana. The men will also face Big Ten rivals in No. 26 Indiana and Ohio State.

SCHRULLE AMONG TOP FIVE
Mareike Schrulle earned a fifth place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 29. The graduate student crossed the 6,000 meter line in 21:17. Schrulle’s career best 6,000 meter time of 21:12 currently ranks 10th all-time at Iowa. Schrulle recorded a time of 22:16 at the 2011 Wisconsin adidas Invitational.

BRANDT GOES BACK TO BACK
Jon Michael Brandt has been Iowa’s top finisher in each of the past two meets. The junior recorded a fourth place finish (25:17) at the Bradley Open on Sept. 7, and finished 24th (25:20) at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 29. Both meets were 8,000-meter events.

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes will have a week off before heading to the Big Ten Cross Country Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Michigan State University will host the event. The Championships will be held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course.
