THIS WEEK The University of Iowa men’s tennis team continues its spring season on Saturday hosting a doubleheader against Creighton and Butler at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Action against Creighton will begin at 9:30 a.m., while the match against Butler will start at 3:30 p.m.

HAWKEYES TAKE DOWN BRADLEY Jonas Dierckx, Matt Hagan, and Michael Swank all went 2-0, individually, to help Iowa take down Bradley. Coming off a victory in doubles play paired together, Dierckx and Hagan stayed hot in singles play, needing only two sets to defeat their opponent. Swank paired up with Garret Dunn in No. 1 doubles action and took home a hard fought victory, 8-6 over Abrams and Cuadrado of Bradley. Swank carried that momentum over into singles play defeating Abrams in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

IOWA FLAWLESS AGAINST WESTERN ILLINOIS Coming off a 5-2 victory over Bradley just hours before, the Hawkeyes did one better beating Western Illinois, 7-0. Iowa started the match strong winning all three doubles matches, securing the lone doubles point. Iowa didn’t let up there as all six Hawkeyes competing in singles won their respective matches in straight sets.

HAGAN SHINES DURING DUAL MEET DOUBLE HEADER Sophomore Matt Hagan wasn’t fazed by having to compete in a dual meet doubleheader. Hagan went a perfect 4-0 on the day against Bradley and Western Illinois. Hagan took down both of his opponents in No. 1 singles play, needing only two sets to do so in both matches. Hagan paired up with Dierckx in No. 2 doubles play and defeated both Bradley and Western Illinois’ opponents.

HEAD COACH Steve Houghton Steve Houghton, the dean of Big Ten tennis coaches, is in his 32nd year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. He has compiled a career record of 332-363 (.478), recording the most wins of any coach in Iowa men’s tennis history.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Steve Houghton “Creighton and Butler are likely to be a step up from what we faced last weekend, so we’ll have to continue to improve in order to have another good weekend.”
