IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team swept a doubleheader Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes shutout Creighton, 7-0 and Butler, 7-0. With the pair of victories, the Hawkeyes improve to 5-1 on the spring season.

“I was really pleased with our team today,” said Iowa head coach Steve Houghton. “To win two matches 7-0 is really a testament to their focus and endurance. I was especially pleased with how we dominated the decisive sets.”

Iowa started off strong against Creighton, winning all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank defeated Norman and Paluch of Creighton, 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx took down Mathison and Thompson of Creighton, 8-2. No. 3 doubles action saw Juan Estenssoro and Joey White beat Baker and Lee of Creighton, 8-4.

The Hawkeyes found similar success in singles action, winning all six matches. Among the highlights, Swank earned a hard fought victory, defeating Dippel of Creighton, 7-5, 7-5 in No. 6 singles. Freshman Dominic Patrick won his third singles match in a row after dropping his first two. Additionally, Hagan won by retirement in No. 1 singles as his opponent Paluch was injured during the third set.

Iowa continued their strong doubles play against Butler as they won 2-of-3 matches to gain the lone doubles point. Dunn and Swank set the tone early for Iowa defeating Weldon and Woldmoe of Butler, 8-6. Hagan and Dierckx followed suit as they beat Bhattacharya and Marx of Butler, 8-5, to secure the doubles point. Iowa has won the doubles point in all six of its matches so far this spring season.

Iowa continued its stellar play and made quick work of Butler in singles action. Again, all six Hawkeyes defeated their opponents in singles play, securing the 7-0 sweep. Dunn defeated Marx of Butler, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 3 singles play. Estenssoro continued to prove to be a value asset to the team as the junior transfer took down O’Neil of Butler, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 4 singles play.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. (CT) as they host Western Michigan at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
