IOWA CITY, Iowa — There’s something about second round National Invitational Tournament games for University of Iowa junior Roy Devyn Marble.

After scoring a career-high 31 points in the second round NIT game last season at Oregon, Marble netted 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including an 8-of-11 effort from the charity stripe, in the Hawkeyes’ 75-63 victory over Stony Brook on in front of a sellout crowd Friday night on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“He was phenomenal tonight,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery. “He handled the ball, got to the free throw line and set the tone in a lot of ways. When I look at the stats, I look for things that jump out at me and the thing that jumps out at me is 20 assists and 26 baskets. That applies to our team, and he’s the guy.”

The performance was Marble’s ninth 20-point game this season and the 11th of his Iowa career. It is also the third highest scoring output of the guard’s career.

The victory was Iowa’s school-record 18th home win this season and advances the team to a NIT quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 27, at a location to be determined by the outcome of Sunday’s Virginia-St. John’s game in Charlottesville, Va.

With the score 46-43 with 15 minutes to play, the Hawkeyes used an 8-1 run to build a 54-44 lead. Marble opened the spurt with a pair of free throws before junior Zach McCabe’s jumper made the score 50-43. Following a SBU free throw, freshman Anthony Clemmons made 1-of-2 free throws before McCabe’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to double digits and forced a Seawolves timeout.

Down 56-46 with 10:25 remaining, Stony Brook scored six straight points to cut the deficit to four. Jameel Warney opened with a layup before Anthony Jackson had a four-point play to make it a 56-52 game.

Iowa had an answer of its own, scoring five straight and 10-of-13 points to build a 66-55 lead. Marble and sophomore Aaron White combined for nine of the 10 points.

“We were running the right plays for the right guys down the stretch,” said Marble. “Eric (May) knocked down a big shot, Josh (Oglesby) knocked down a big shot, and Gabe (Olaseni) got the big and-one and knocked the free throw down.”

Stony Brook managed to get to within seven points (69-62) with two minutes to play, but Iowa answered again, as it did all night, with a lay-up and-one by sophomore Gabriel Olaseni to push the lead back to double digits (72-62).

“We made the plays down the stretch, and we weren’t doing that in the Big Ten season,” said Marble. “Now we’re starting to do that in this tournament. If we can continue to do that, I think we’ll be alright.”

Iowa shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor and made 8-of-19 3-pointers (42.1) percent; Stony Brook made 24-of-51 field goal attempts (47.1 percent) and was 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from long range. The Hawkeyes won the rebounding battle, 34-30. Iowa also had five blocks to run its season total to 175 — a new school record.

White was the only other Hawkeye in double figures, finishing with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting. He also had a team-high seven rebounds. Werney led a group of three Seawolves in double digits, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with seven boards.

Iowa got off to a sizzling start, making 7-of-9 attempts to take a 17-11 lead at the 14:56 mark. Marble scored 10 of the team’s first 12 points. Stony Brook showed its scrappiness, matching nearly every Hawkeye score.

“We wanted to get off to a good start against this team,” said Marble. “They have really good guard play. When you have really good guard play, you’re always going to be within striking distance, and we know that.”

The Seawolves cut the lead to 17-14 on a Dave Coley 3-pointer, and the guard’s second triple at the 11:24 mark made it a 21-19 score. After a jumper by Marble pushed the Iowa advantage to 25-22, Stony Brook scored six straight to build a 28-25 lead.

The Hawkeyes took the lead into the break when sophomore Josh Oglesby knocked down a 3-pointer on a set play with the clock winding down to give Iowa a 37-34 advantage. Iowa shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the floor and 47.1 percent (4-of-7) from long range; Stony Brook made 14-of-27 attempts (51.9 percent) and was 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from 3-point distance.
