Iowa Routs Ontario in Fall Ball Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team scored runs in eight innings en route to a 15-6 victory over the Ontario Blue Jays on Monday in its fall ball opener at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes pounded out 22 hits in the 15-inning contest.

Eleven Iowa players tallied at least one hit in the game. Junior Jake Yacinich led the team with four hits, going 4-for-7 with three RBIs and a run scored. Junior Nick Day (3-for-7, three runs), junior Eric Toole (3-for-7, three runs), and sophomore Nick Roscetti (3-for-6, two doubles, one run, one RBI) each had three hits.

Senior Taylor Zeutenhorst finished 2-for-8 with a run and RBI, and senior Trevor Kenyon was 2-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored.

Twelve pitchers limited the Blue Jays to 12 hits over 15 innings. Junior Sasha Kuebel, sophomore Tyler Peyton and junior Ryan Rumpf each threw two innings, allowing zero runs on two hits.

Junior Nick Hibbing, sophomore Blake Hickman, junior Brandon Shulista, and junior Jacob Sharp all tossed scoreless innings in relief.

Iowa returns to action Friday, hosting Kirkwood Community College at 4 p.m. at Banks Field.
