Hawkeyes Close Out Fall With Win Over DMACC

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team downed Des Moines Area Community College, 11-10 in nine innings and 4-3 in extra innings, on Wednesday at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes finished the fall with a 4-0 record.

Iowa plated seven runs in its final two at-bats to rally from a six-run deficit to down the Bears, 11-10, in the first nine innings. The Hawkeyes plated three runs on three hits in the eighth inning. Junior Jake Yacinich started things off with a double to centerfield before pinch runner Jake Riffice came around to score on Tyler Peyton’s RBI single to right.

Following back-to-back walks by senior Bryan Niedbalski and John Barrett, junior Jake Mangler lined a two-out, two-run single to centerfield to make the score 10-7.

After junior Nick Hibbing retired DMACC in order in the top of the ninth, the Iowa bats went back to work. Senior Trevor Kenyon drew a one-out walk before the Hawkeyes got back-to-back triples from Yacinich and senior Taylor Zeutenhorst to cut the lead to 10-9.

Following a Peyton line-out to short, Niedbalski evened the tally at 10 with Iowa’s third triple of the inning to right field. Iowa plated the winning run when Barrett, Dan Potempa and Mangler were plunked by DMACC pitcher Tyler Wolfe to force in the winning run.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, courtesy of six hits, including two doubles. After DMACC pushed its lead to 6-0 in the second, Iowa struck back for a pair of runs in its at-bat. Yacinich led off the inning with a double before crossing the plate on a two-run homer to left field from Niedbalski.

The two teams traded a pair of runs in the fourth inning before DMACC pushed its lead to 10-4 with two runs in the seventh.

Five Hawkeyes tallied multi-hit games, which included a five-hit, three-run, one-RBI game by Yacinich. Four of the junior’s five hits went for extra bases, as he finished with three doubles and a triple.

Peyton went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Niedbalski was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs, Barrett was 2-for-3, and Zeutenhorst was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Mangler finished with three RBIs in the contest.

On the mound, four Hawkeyes pitched scoreless innings. Sophomores Jared Mandel, Blake Hickman and Tyler Radtke and junior Nick Hibbing each had hitless innings of work. Mandel, Hibbing and Hickman each struck out two of the three batters they faced.

In the extra innings, Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead before holding off the Bears for a 4-3 win. Junior Joe Tellez scored Iowa’s first run in the second on an RBI groundout by Hickman before Zeutenhorst’s RBI double plated Nick Roscetti in the third.

A fourth-inning home run from DMACC’s Roman Collins cut the Iowa lead in half, but the Hawkeyes answered with two runs in the fourth. Following a Kenyon single to lead-off the inning, Iowa plated both its runs courtesy of three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The Bears pushed two runs across the plate in their final at-bat before junior Jacob Sharp worked out of trouble on the mound by inducing a double play and getting Reid Bonner swinging to end the game.

Tellez scoring two of Iowa’s four runs in the extra innings, and Hickman had a pair of RBIs.

Junior Brandon Shulista allowed one hit and posted three strikeouts in two innings of work. Freshman Jake Reinhardt also threw a scoreless inning in relief, finishing with two punch-outs.

The Hawkeyes will close out the fall with the Black & Gold World Series on Oct. 14-16.
