WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team wrapped up day 1 of competition at the Wake Forest Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C., Friday evening. Nine Hawkeyes saw action Friday, with junior Matt Hagan highlighting the day.
Hagan, playing in the top bracket of singles, A1, beat the number 2-seed Anthony Delcore of Wake Forest in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The win held extra meaning, as both Hagan and Delcore hail from Omaha, Neb., and Hagan had never defeated Delcore at any level before today.
Elsewhere, Michael Swank won his only singles match of the day in, playing in the D2 bracket, defeating Marko Jerminov of South Carolina State, 7-6(2), 6-3.
In singles, Jonas Dierckx, Juan Estenssoro, and Dominic Patrick all won their second round match, after dropping their opening match.
In doubles play, the teams of Michael Swank and Joey White won their first round matchup, dropping Kealy/Salwan from UNC-Wilmington, 8-3.
The Hawkeyes return to the courts for day 2 of competition.
