Talcott, Seaborne Advance at Central Regionals

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s tennis players Shelby Talcott, Morven McCulloch, Ruth Seaborne and Katie Zordani accounted for six total victories in day three of action at the ITA Central Regionals today.

“We picked up 6 quality wins today,” said University of Iowa head coach Katie Dougherty.

After knocking off Missouri’s Madison Rhyner in the first round, Talcott followed up with a second round victory over Maria Sant’Anna of Tulsa, 6-2, 6-4.

Ruth Seaborne, the No. 65-ranked singles player in the country, defeated Oklahoma State’s Maria Alvarez, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, before earning a victory over Kelli Hine of Missouri in the second round, 6-1, 6-3.

“Ruth and Shelby both battled well today after each being down a set in their first round matches to pick up two singles wins today. Shelby fought off a couple of match points and got herself back into the match,” said Dougherty.

Junior Katie Zordani also notched a win in the first round by defeating Sarah McLean of Arkansas in three sets, 1-6, 6-5, 6-0. Zordani later fell to Maria Belen Luduena of Kansas in the second round.

Katie Zordani picked up a great win in her first round match coming back after being a set and 5-2 down to win 11 straight games.

Junior Morven McCulloch added a victory in the consolation bracket scoring a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Minnesota’s Jessika Mozia.

“Overall it was a very good day for us,” added Dougherty.

Seaborne and Talcott return to the courts tomorrow at 9 a.m. (CT)
