WACO, Texas — Getterman Classic host No. 14/16 Baylor posted two runs, one in the first and another in the fifth, to post a 2-0 win over the University of Iowa softball team on Saturday night. The Hawkeyes drop to 2-6 overall, while the Bears move to 7-2 on the season.

The Baylor offense wasted no time reaching the scoreboard, as they used a Clare Hosack double to plate one in the bottom of the first inning.

The Hawkeyes saw runners reach in the third on a Whitney Repole hit by pitch and put a leadoff aboard in the fourth with a Sammi Gyerman single, but could not erase their zero in the scoring column.

Iowa threated once again in the fourth when Michelle Zoeller legged out a leadoff double in the top of the fourth. A pop out and fly out gave the Bears two outs, and the third came when Zoeller left early, tagging up on the fly ball out.

Baylor led off with a single in the bottom of the fifth and saw its runner advance to second on an error, to third on a ground out, and home on a fielder’s choice, extending the Bear lead to two runs.

In the top of the sixth inning, Iowa put two consecutive batters on base with a Claire Fritsch double — the first of her Hawkeye career — and an Erin Erickson walk. Baylor’s starter Heather Stearns forced the first out of the inning with a fly ball, and was replaced by Liz Paul in the circle, who stopped the Iowa offense with a groundout and strikeout.

A scoreless seventh inning ended the game and preserved the 2-0 Baylor shutout win. Kayla Massey (0-4) took the loss in the circle. She struck out three and allowed two runs on five hits.

Zoeller (1-for-3), Gyerman (1-for-2) and Fritsch (1-for-2) each posted a hit for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes conclude Getterman Classic action with a single game against in-state foe Drake on Sunday morning. Fans can follow along with the 9 a.m. (CT) contest through Gametracker at hawkeyesports.com.
