Hawkeyes Compete in Finals of San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO — The University of Iowa women’s rowing team competed in the final day of the 41st annual San Diego Crew Classic, Sunday in San Diego. All three Iowa boats competed in the finals for their respective races.

Iowa’s 2V8+ boat showed a strong performance, taking the runner-up spot in the 2V8+ petite finals. The Hawkeyes finished in 6:53.38, three seconds behind first place Gonzaga. Kansas State finished third, two seconds behind the Hawkeyes.

In the final of the Collegiate Cal. Cup, the Hawkeyes 1V8+ boat finished fifth in 7:04.38, beating out sixth-place Kansas State by a second. British Columbia took home the cup with a winning time of 6:53.92 as the University of Victoria, St. Mary’s and Tulsa finished in second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Hawkeye’s struggled to crack the top-five in the 1V4+ final for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. Iowa finished sixth with a time of 7:56.63, four seconds behind San Diego. Sixth-ranked USC took home the cup with a winning time of 7:36.92 and second-ranked California-Berkley finished second, six seconds behind. 10th-ranked UCLA, fourth-ranked Washington and San Diego rounded out the top-five finishes.

The Hawkeyes return home to host their first meet of the season as they will race against crews from Ohio State, Indiana and Louisville at Lake MacBride in Solon, Iowa on Saturday, April 12, in an all-day event.
