Ihm Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

April 16, 2014

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa men’s golfer Steven Ihm has been named the Big Ten Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The honor comes after Ihm earned medalist honors at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational while guiding Iowa to a team tournament title. Iowa topped second place finisher Iowa State by fifteen strokes.

“Steven was focused and patient all weekend,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “He stayed tough through some adverse conditions and finished strong to earn a solid individual title.”

Ihm captured the individual title at Iowa’s home tournament for the second consecutive year behind a seven-under-par score of 209. The Peosta, Iowa, native began the final day in third place before carding a bogey-free final round of 69 (-3) to capture the title. Ihm added three birdies in his final 18 holes to tie for the low round of the day. The individual title is the third of Ihm’s Hawkeye career.

“I’m very honored to be awarded again by the Big Ten,” said Ihm. “I’m looking forward to competing again this week at the Boilermaker Invitational and taking confidence into post-season play.”

The honor is the fourth of Ihm’s career. He last earned Golfer of the Week honors on Oct. 30, 2013. Brian Bullington earned the award on March 26 after finishing third at the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational.

Iowa resumes play on April 19-20, where they will attempt to defend their 2013 Boilermaker Invitational Title at the Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Ihm captured co-medalist honors in last year’s event.
