IOWA CITY, Iowa — One goal wasn’t enough for the University of Iowa field hockey team as it fell to Ohio State, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field. The loss drops the Hawkeyes to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play.
Ohio State got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead with just over a minute to play before halftime. The Hawkeyes recorded five shots, while limiting the Buckeyes to two in what was a defense-filled opening half.
The Hawkeyes tied the game at one after a Mallory Lefkowitz goal in the 39th minute. The sophomore volleyed a shot from close range after fellow sophomore Veronique Declercq’s initial shot was saved by the keeper.
Though Iowa dominated the second half statistically — outshooting Ohio State, 17-8, while holding a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners — it could not find the goal. Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro made nine saves on the day.
Ohio State’s Peanut Johnson scored back-to-back goals in the 56th and 60th minute marks to give the Buckeyes the lead for good.
Iowa ended Sunday’s contest having outshot Ohio State, 22-10, while holding an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Iowa hits the road next weekend for a trip east to take on Penn State in a conference bout on Oct. 23. Next Friday’s contest between the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions begins at 1:30 p.m. (CT) and will be televised live on BTN.
