This Week:
The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opens the fall season, Sept. 16-17, at the Valpo Fall Tennis Invitational. The tournament will host athletes from seven schools: Valpo, Purdue, Iowa, Washington U., Eastern Illinois, Butler, and Chicago State. Sophomore Tony Leto and freshman Jason Kerst will be making the trip to Valparaiso, Indiana. Doubles competition will begin Friday at noon followed by singles later in the day.
A Fresh Outlook:
Jason Kerst, a freshman from Ann Arbor, Michigan, will take the court in his first match as a Hawkeye this weekend.
“I’m nervous and excited, but I think it will prepare me well for the spring season,” said Kerst.
The newcomer says he’s ready to compete for his teammates, something he’s never done before.
“I’ve played tennis for 15 years and never had a team before so that shift is pretty strange but I’m loving it,” Kerst said.
“Last month in Indiana I had a really late match, I played at about 10:30 p.m. and everyone stayed to cheer me on. I was way down in the match but ultimately came back to win. That was a cool feeling.”
