IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Student-Athlete Academic Services has recognized senior Peter Jok and sophomore Megan Gustafson as December’s male and female student-athletes of the month.
This honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sport, but in the classroom as well.
Jok, a sports and recreation management major, led Power 5 conferences in scoring in December, averaging 20 points while grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game. Jok tied a Carver-Hawkeye Arena record against Omaha on Dec. 3, making all 12 free throw attempts. That mark matches Luke Recker (2001), Val Barnes (1992), and Roy Marble (1988) The West Des Moines native was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Dec. 12, after leading Iowa to wins over Stetson and No. 25 Iowa State. Jok is one of 30 candidates for the national Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.
Gustafson led the Iowa women’s basketball team to a 5-2 record in December, averaging 17.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game on her way to four double-doubles. The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll following Iowa’s 83-48 victory over Kent State. She is fourth in the country in field goal percentage (.669) and sixth in rebounds (159). Gustafson is a business major, ISAAC Representative, and a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity.
The Iowa men’s basketball team is back in action on Sunday against Rutgers. Tipoff is set for 3:36 p.m. on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Iowa women return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to take on Illinois. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip.
