Gustafson Breaks B1G Record with 7th Player of the Week Honor

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Megan Gustafson broke a Big Ten single-season record with her seventh Big Ten Player of the Week award, the conference office announced Monday. Gustafson broke Jantel Lavender’s (Ohio State) previous record of six (2010-11).
 
The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native has been recognized by the conference in 12 of the first 13 weeks of the season. She was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 13, Dec. 4, Dec. 18, Dec. 26, Jan. 2, and Jan. 15, and was named to the honor roll on Nov. 20, Nov. 27, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, and Jan. 29.
 
Gustafson averaged 30.5 points, 16.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in a pair of Big Ten wins last week. She netted 36 points on 14-of-19 shooting from the field and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Iowa to an overtime win at Michigan State on Feb. 1. Gustafson recorded an offensive rebound, drew a foul, and sank two free throws with :08 seconds remaining in regulation to send Iowa to overtime against the Spartans. She scored four points and pulled down three rebounds in the overtime period, including two free throws to seal the victory for the Hawkeyes.
 
On Feb. 4, Gustafson scored 25 points, pulled down 15 rebounds, and registered two blocks in Iowa’s win over Minnesota. Gustafson scored 20 of her 25 points in the second half, including 12 straight points in the third quarter.
 
Gustafson registered the 48th and 49th double-doubles of her career last week, breaking an Iowa basketball record (men or women) for double-doubles in a career. Former Iowa men’s basketball player Kevin Kunnert held the previous record of 48 (1971-73).
 
Gustafson and the Hawkeyes return to action on Thursday, hosting Penn State at 7 p.m. (CT) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
