Fayetteville, Ark. — The University of Iowa track & field team finished the first day of the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic on Friday.

The team split up for the second straight weekend. A group of Hawkeyes went to the Tyson Invitational, hosted by Arkansas, and another group went to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic.  The Tyson Invitational caters to sprinters and shorter distances, while the Iowa State Classic’s oversized track aids longer distance runners.

TYSON INVITATIONAL
Freshmen Aly Weum (56.24) and Antonise Christian (57.24) and sophomore Tashee Hargrave (55.82) set personal bests in the 400 meters.

Chris Thompson placed seventh in the open 400 meters for the men. He finished with a time of 47.53.

In the women’s weight throw, sophomore Lagi Tausaga and junior Nia Britt placed second and ninth, respectively. Britt set a new personal best in the event with a best mark of 17.21 meters (56-feet, 5.75-inches). That mark improves her to eighth in school history.

Junior Chris Douglas placed third overall in the men’s 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.81
Junior Mar’yea Harris placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 46.17.

Senior Jahisha Thomas finished runner-up in the long jump. Her best mark was 6.23 meters.

IOWA STATE CLASSIC
Sophomore Antonio Woodard placed second overall in the 200 meters with a time of 21.27.

In the men’s 3,000 meters, Daniel Soto (8:11.83) and Ian Eklin (8:16.75). Soto’s time places him eighth in school history and marks the second straight week that Soto has placed an all-time top-ten mark.

Junior Andrea Shine also placed an all-time mark in the 5,000 meters. She is also eighth in school history with a time of 16:21.53.

In the women’s 3,000 meters, Marta Bote Gonzalez finished seventh (9:48.34) and Madison Waymire was ninth (9:50.34). Waymire’s time is a personal best.

FIGHT FOR IOWA
The Hawkeyes set seven personal bests in both meets.

This is the second straight weekend that Britt and Soto have set personal bests. Britt set the second best mark in Iowa shot put history at the Meyo Invitational and Soto set a personal best in  the 5,000-meters.

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes continue the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic tomorrow. The Tyson Invitational is set to resume at 11 a.m. (CT), while the Iowa State Classic resumes at 12 p.m.
