IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa softball’s Allison Doocy was named co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Michigan’s Meghan Beaubien shares the honor with Doocy. This is the first time a Hawkeye has earned the honor since Kayla Massey on March 31, 2014.
“Doocy had a great weekend for us,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “This weekend was just an accumulation of the last few weeks she has given us in the circle. She continues to grow each time she is on the mound, and I am excited to see where she goes the rest of the season.”
This is the first pitcher of the week award for Doocy and the second weekly conference honor of her career. She was named the freshman of the week on April 17, 2017.
Doocy went 2-0 in the circle from March 10-11 at the Grand Canyon Invitational, recording a perfect 0.00 ERA and allowing just seven hits and 3 walks in 11.0 innings pitched. The sophomore led Iowa to a 12-1 win against Grand Canyon on Saturday, but her performance in the Hawkeyes’ 2-0 victory over Georgetown was one for the record books.
Doocy racked up a personal-best 15 strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched against the Hoyas on Sunday, with the final 10 outs of the game coming from her hand. The 15 strikeouts marks the most in a single game by any Hawkeye since 2009 (Brittany Weil vs. Kent State, Feb. 13). Doocy also allowed just four hits and earned her second shutout of the season.
Doocy and the Hawkeyes take the field again tonight in a rubber match against Grand Canyon. First pitch is slated for 9 p.m. (CT) at the GCU Softball Stadium.
