IOWA CITY, Iowa — Incoming freshman, Oliver Okonkwo, joins the Iowa Men’s Tennis Program after an impressive performance at the Junior International Roehampton. Okonkwo, the eighth-ranked junior in the LTA U18 national rankings, played his way into the singles main draw and advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles in the Grade 1 event that leads up to Wimbledon.
In singles action, Okonkwo knocked off a pair of junior world ranked players — No. 60 Alejo Lorenzo Lingua Lavallen (6-3, 6-4) and No. 69 Louis Herman 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 before falling in the main draw. In doubles, Okonkwo partnered with Alexander Maggs to earn his way into the main draw with a win over the third seeded team of Adrian Andreev and Nick Hardt, 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 in the opening round. In the Round of 16, the tandem lost a tight third set tiebreaker.
The Hawkeyes return from a monumental year that saw 16 dual wins, the fourth most in school history. Iowa also finished with their highest final ranking in school history.
