IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sophomore Aly Weum runs mid-distance races for the Iowa track & field team. Her freshman year included the 4,000 meters (16:49.7) at the 2017 Hawkeye Invite as a training session for the track season, a win in the 400 meters (57.33) at the Hawkeye Indoor Invite, and the leading 3,200-meter relay (9:15.26) at the Florida Relays.

What do you want to achieve this season (personally and as a team)?
“I want to make the Big Ten final indoors and outdoors, and score points for the team. I also want to make it to the post season. As a team, I think we need to compete to win a Big Ten title.”

What is your best advice for the freshmen?
“My best advice would be to love what you do. It is tough to show up to something every day and pour all of your energy into it if you don’t love it. Just have fun and remember why you do your sport!”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received from a coach?
“‘Be confident, go out there and just Hulk Smash everyone,’ from Coach Wakenight.”

What made you choose to come to Iowa?
“It reminded me of home but it was further away compared to the University of Wisconsin, and who doesn’t want to be a Hawkeye?”

Who has been the most influential person at Iowa?
“The most influential person at Iowa so far has to be Jahisha Thomas. She would come to practice every day with an open mind, positive attitude, and willingness to face any challenge that was put in front of her.”

If not XC/Track & Field, what sport would you play?
“Basketball, hands down.”

What is one thing people don’t know about you?
“I love to sing.”

Do you have any pre-meet rituals?
“I listen to country music.”

When you’re not practicing, what is your favorite thing to do?
“Spend time with my friends, family, and puppy.”

What’s your favorite cheesy pick-up line and have you ever used it in real life?
“‘Are you a parking ticket? ‘Cause you’ve got fine written all over you.’ I haven’t ever used it, but I will.”

If you could choose one super power, what would you choose?
“I would choose being able to fly. It is so efficient in getting places, and I wouldn’t have to deal with traffic.”

If you could choose anywhere to live, where would you choose?
“California, on the beach. I love the ocean and the sun.”

Where’s your favorite spot on campus?
“The indoor track because I have had some of my best and worst days in that place.”

What is your favorite meal?
“Steak and cheesy potatoes!”
