Softball Opens Fall Season With Win Over Kirkwood CC

IOWA CITY,Iowa — The University of Iowa Softball team opened up its fall season, defeating Kirkwood Community College, 10-6, on Bob Pearl Field on Friday night.

It was head coach Renee Gillispie’s Iowa debut after 18 seasons at the University of Central Florida.

“How cool is it to have a fall game and have the stands packed,” Gillispie said. “Kudos go out to our fan base. The Iowa fans that love softball, I mean that’s why I came back home. We have a fan base that is incredible here at Iowa and I am just so excited about them coming out and helping us open up our first game.”

Junior pitcher Allison Doocy allowed no hits in the first two innings. Doocy recorded eight strikeouts. Miranda Schulte relieved Doocy in the third where she only allowed one hit.

The Hawkeyes scored three runs in the first inning with a big hit from Mallory Kilian, who had two RBIs and led the team with 4 hits. Elizabeth Deshields tallied three hits to help the Hawkeyes to a total of 18 hits as a team.

The Hawkeyes are back at Bob Pearl Field next Friday where they will take on the Des Moines Area Community College Bears at 5pm (CT).
