IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Alex Schaake has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 16-18, the conference announced on Wednesday. It is the first honor of his career.

The Omaha, Nebraska, native finished tied for second individually, and helped the Hawkeyes place second as a team in the rain-shortened event held at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. Schaake surged 21 spots on the leaderboard in the second round after carding seven birdies, with six on the front nine, including four straight. He finished the second round at five-under par with an 18-hole score of 67 and posted a 36-hole score of 139 (-5). Schaake fired 27 pars — third most in the field — and posted two rounds below par to give him a team-leading five rounds at or below par on the season.

Schaake is the first Hawkeye to earn a Golfer of the Week award since Raymond Knoll earned the honor on Sept. 30, 2015.

Iowa travels to Erin, Wisconsin, for the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
