Allaf, Davies win at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — University of Iowa men’s tennis student-athletes Kareem Allaf and Will Davies each won singles matches on Friday in the main draw at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Davies won matches over Sean Hill of BYU (7-5, 6-4) and Virginia Tech’s Alexandre Ribeiro (6-3, 6-3), who is seeded fifth and ranked 101st nationally, to advance to the quarterfinals. Allaf beat Tennessee’s Preston Touliatos (7-5, 6-4) before falling to 14th-seeded William Howells of Notre Dame in the Round of 16 in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-0).

Sophomore Piotr Smietana dropped his Round of 32 match to Edson Ortiz of Alabama, 6-1, 6-3. Senior Jonas Larsen lost to Minnesota’s Marino Alpeza by a narrow margin (5-7, 6-4, 10-8) in the consolation bracket.

Davies/Smietana won their opening doubles match in the main draw, 8-2, over IUPUI. The Hawkeye duo will face seventh-seeded Howells/Gamble of Notre Dame in the Round of 16 on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic is an ITA Gold Level Event; its men’s singles champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 7-11, in Indian Wells, California.
