Murphy Named B1G Co-Offensive Player of the Week

IOWA CITY, IOWA – University of Iowa field hockey sophomore Maddy Murphy was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Field Hockey GraphicIt is Murphy’s first weekly honor of the season and second of her career. Murphy shares this week’s Offensive Player of the Week award with Daphne Groothuis of Rutgers.
 
Murphy, a native of Riana, Tasmania, recorded her first career hat trick in Iowa’s 3-2 victory over No. 6 Penn State on Friday. She scored in the 23rd, 52nd, and the 67th minute to lead the Hawkeyes to their first win over Penn State since 2014. The win also marked Iowa’s first win over a top-10 opponent since 2016 when Iowa beat No. 9 Northwestern.
 
Murphy’s goal with just over two minutes remaining was her fourth game-winning goal of the season, which is tied for the most in the Big Ten. The sophomore forward added to her seven-point weekend with an assist against No. 2 Maryland. She has scored a team-leading 13 goals, good for second most in the conference.
 
Murphy and the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes wrap up the regular season on Friday, Oct. 19 in Piscataway, New Jersey, at 3 p.m. (CT) to face No. 14 Rutgers.
