KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Iowa sophomores Michelle Bacalla and Cloe Ruette split two doubles matches on the first day of the WMU Fall Invite. Ruette also won her singles match.

In the first round of doubles, Bacalla and Ruette lost to Aspasia Avgeri and Marija Jovicic from DePaul University, 6-3. In the second round of doubles, Bacalla and Ruette defeated Lenka Antonijevic and Yulia Kizelbasheva, 6-1.

In the first round of singles, Ruette won in three sets against Anna Daniel Fuentes from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee: 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. Bacalla dropped her match in three sets to Kizelbasheva from DePaul: 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-4.

“It is good for Michelle and Cloe to get out there again, and get tested in a competitive environment,” said assistant coach Daniel Leitner. “We definitely didn’t play our best tennis in the morning, but we settled in as the day went along and finished on a positive note. Hopefully, we can build on the positives and have a good second day tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes continue action at the WMU Fall Invite Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT).
