IOWA CITY, Iowa — Seniors Isabella Blackman and Hannah Drkulec have been voted team captains for the University of Iowa soccer team for the 2019 season, it was announced Monday by head coach Dave DiIanni.

“Having been chosen captains of this program by their peers is an incredible privilege that both women understand and appreciate,” said DiIanni. “We are excited that they will be great representatives of the coaching staff extended on and off the field this season.”

Blackman, a midfielder from Bettendorf, Iowa, started 16 games for the Hawkeyes in 2018.  She logged 1,408 minutes — the fifth-most on the team — despite missing one game.  Blackman has started 46 games in her career, where she has one goal and two assists.

Drkulec, a defender from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, started all 18 games as a junior.  She logged 1,583 minutes to anchor an Iowa back line that posted six shutouts.  Drkulec has started 32 games in her Iowa career, where she has scored one goal and tallied three assists.

Iowa opens the 2019 season with an exhibition contest at Michigan on Aug. 16.  The Hawkeyes open the regular season with four straight home games, beginning with an Aug. 22 matchup with Western Michigan.
