IOWA CITY, Iowa – One day after earning Big Ten Conference recognition, University of Iowa senior Michael Kemerer has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.

Kemerer is the country’s top-ranked 174-pounder after registering a pair of nationally-ranked wins last weekend, including an 11-6 decision against then-top-ranked Mark Hall of Penn State on Friday, and a 13-3 major decision against No. 23 Layne Malczewski of Michigan State on Sunday.

Kemerer’s win against Hall helped No. 1 Iowa defeat No. 2 Penn State, 19-17.

Each week USA Wrestling selects an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

The top-ranked Hawkeyes return to action Saturday at No. 22 Michigan. The dual is televised on BTN.
