Schaake Leads Colleton River Collegiate

BLUFFTON, S.C. — University of Iowa men’s golf senior Alex Schaake leads the Colleton River Collegiate after firing a five-under par 139 in the tournament’s first two rounds Monday at the par-72 Pete Dye Course. Schaake posted a two-under-par 70 in the first round followed by a three-under-par 69 in the afternoon.

The Hawkeyes finished the day tied for sixth place posting a 12-over-par total for the day (six-over-par in both rounds). Iowa leads the three other Big Ten teams in the 15-team field (Michigan State, Rutgers, and Ohio State).

Schaake’s second-round 69 ties his season best for the third time. The Omaha, Nebraska, native recorded his 10th and 11th round at or below par this season. Sophomore Gonzalo Leal Montero carded his 10th round at or below par with his second round 70.

OF NOTE

  • Schaake and junior Joe Kim each posted an eagle on Monday to total a field-leading two eagles for the Hawkeyes.
  • Leal Montero is tied for sixth in par 5 scoring (4.57).
  • Schaake finished the day with nine birdies which ties for second most in the field.
  • Iowa carded 29 birdies, which is only four off the lead of the field.
