Iowa Falls in Nail Biter to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 2 ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (10-3, 5-3) fell, 2-1, to No. 8 Northwestern (9-4, 5-3) on Thursday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After battling through a scoreless first quarter, sophomore Esme Gibson notched Iowa’s lone goal unassisted in the beginning of the second quarter to put Iowa on top, 1-0.

Towards the end of the second quarter Northwestern answered back with its own goal to tie the game, 1-1, at half.

Right out of half, the Wildcats found the back of the cage to take the lead, 2-1.

Early in the fourth, an Iowa goal would’ve evened the score, but the call was overturned deeming the ball touched an Iowa player’s foot before scoring the goal.

With 12 seconds left in the match, Iowa challenged a call off its penalty corner. The call overturned put five seconds back on the clock. The Hawkeyes got a shot off, but it was too wide leaving the Wildcats with the victory.

  • Gibson’s goal registered her second goal of the season.
