Hawkeyes Fall to No. 14 Washington

BOULDER, Colo. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to No. 14 Washington, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the CU Events Center in the PAC-12/Big Ten Challenge. This was the first match of the weekend for both the Hawkeyes and Huskies.

Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Urquhart led the Hawkeyes in hitting percentage with .438, registering eight kills. Redshirt senior Lily Tessier registered 36 assists, while senior Mari Hinkle tallied 13.

SET 1 (UW, 25-15): Scoring went back-and-forth from the start. The Huskies pulled ahead by five after two kills, two errors and an ace, taking the lead, 9-4. Washington stayed ahead by six or more the rest of the set despite Iowa’s efforts to push back. Iowa tallied kills through the end of the set, but in the end the Huskies maintained their lead to secure the set victory.

SET 2 (UW, 25-21): The Hawkeyes stayed within three points of the Huskies thanks to multiple aces from Amiya Jones and kills from Jones, Urquhart, and Delaney McSweeney. The teams tied up at 15, forcing Washington to take their first time out. Washington came back from their time out ready to rival, staying at least three points ahead through the end, taking the win by four. Statistically this was Iowa’s best set, with the Hawkeyes hitting at .300, registering 17 kills and tallying 14 digs.

SET 3 (UW, 25-19): The set started out with both teams going back-and-forth until the Huskies went on a 5-0 run, putting them ahead 9-3. Iowa played hard but errors allowed the Huskies to maintain their lead. Washington stayed ahead by at least four through the end.

“Washington is a top-ten team, and we learned a lot about how aggressive we need to play to compete with a team like that. In set two, we competed really well and had our chances even after Toyosi went down, but we couldn’t maintain it. In the third set we made too many errors, but some things we can learn from.”

The Hawkeyes take on Colorado at 2:30 p.m. CT on Sunday inside CU Events Center. The match will be streamed on PAC-12 Plus.
