IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa is holding an on-campus blood drive next week as part of Abbott and the Big Ten’s We Give Blood Drive. Here’s why — the United States is currently experiencing the largest blood shortage in a generation.
This highly visual, on-campus blood drive during Homecoming Week is part of a competition between the 18 Big Ten Conference schools. A $1 million prize is on the line for the winning university to advance student or community health. As of today, the Hawkeyes are ranked 11th in the standings and are looking to make a big push to climb up the leaderboard.

“The We Give Blood Drive” goes beyond this event; Hawkeye fans, alumni and more can donate blood at participating blood centers and have their donation count towards the $1 million dollar prize for the University of Iowa.
“The We Give Blood Drive” blood donation competition runs through Dec. 6, 2024, with the winner announced at the Big Ten Championship Game on Dec. 7, in Indianapolis. Donation totals will be tracked live at BigTen.Org/Abbott throughout the campaign.
Individual donors will be offered a free one-month subscription to B1G+ and will be entered to win a trip to the 2024 Big Ten Football Championship Game on Dec. 7, 2024.
