Bio

John Engelbrecht was named assistant football strength and conditioning coach in August, 2022. He previously served in the position of nutrition and performance analytics since March, 2021. Engelbrecht also served as a strength and conditioning intern within the football program from August-December, 2019 and worked as a strength and conditioning assistant with the Iowa wrestling program in 2019.

Iowa posted an 8-5 record in 2022, concluding the season with a 21-0 win over Kentucky in the Music City Bowl and wins in five of its final six games. Iowa’s streak of 10 straight bowl invitations is the longest in school history and the Hawkeyes have been in the Top 25 final rankings in four of the last five seasons. The Hawkeyes won 10 games in 2021, winning the Big Ten’s West Division title and advancing to the conference championship game. Iowa concluded the season with an appearance in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl and was ranked 23rd in the nation in the final national rankings.

Iowa closed the 2021 regular season with four straight victories to earn the West Division title for the second time since 2015. Iowa has earned 24 conference wins in the past four seasons, matching Iowa’s highest four-year conference win total since 2002-05.

Engelbrecht served as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Virginia Tech in 2020, working with Olympic sports. At Virginia Tech he worked with 13 sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s golf, lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

His duties also included the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for men’s spirit teams, and the organization and maintaining of the Olympic sports weight room.

Engelbrecht previously served as a weight room supervisor at Cornell College, where he developed a program for the women’s soccer team. His experience also includes serving as volunteer strength and speed coach at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, High School.

Engelbrecht is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength & Conditioning Association and is CPR/AED certified by the American Red Cross.

Engelbrecht earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell College in 2020 and is on track to earn his master’s degree from Concordia University of Chicago in May, 2022. Engelbrecht was a four-year member of the wrestling squad as an undergraduate at Cornell College.

Engelbrecht was born Oct. 13, 1997, and is a native of Mount Vernon, Iowa. He is single.
