Hawkeyes Close Regular Season With 5 Grand View Open Titles

The University of Iowa women's wrestling team closed out the 2024-25 regular season with six top-three finishes at the Grand View Open on Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa women's wrestling team closed out the 2024-25 regular season with six top-three finishes at the Grand View Open on Saturday. Five Hawkeyes won individual titles, including Rianne Murphy, Ava Bayless, Reese Larramendy, Naomi Simon and Katja Osteen.

Murphy pinned each of her three opponents in under two minutes en route to the 103-pound finals. She matched up against Hawkeye teammate Sterling Dias and won, 5-0, to claim first place. Dias reached the title match by earning a tech fall, pin and decision. 

Bayless cruised her way to the 110-pound finals with two tech falls and a 20-second pin. She prevailed over teammate Valarie Solorio in the championship, 7-0. 

Solorio earned two decisions and a fall in 1:21 to reach the semifinals, where she faced Hawkeye teammate Emilie Gonzalez and came out on top, 8-0. Gonzalez battled in the consolation bracket to earn third place at 110 pounds. 

At 145 pounds, Larramendy collected two decisions and a tech. fall to reach the semis. She defeated teammate Ella Schmit, 8-2, before clinching first place with a 10-5 decision. Schmit ended up earning fourth at 145 pounds. 

Simon dominated the 180-pound bracket, earning two pins and two tech falls on her way to the title. 

Osteen earned a tech fall and pinned two opponents en route to the championship match, where she faced teammate Alivia White and won, 9-1. 

Mia Goodwin (unattached) took the title at 124 pounds in the silver bracket, going 5-0 on the day with four tech. falls. 

The other Hawkeyes who placed include Nanea Estrella (138, 5th), Allie Baudhuin (131, 6th in silver bracket), Emmily Patneaud (131, 5th), Karlee Brooks (131, 6th), Danni Swihart (138, 4th in silver bracket), Rose Cassioppi (160, 4th) and Sam Calkins (207, 4th).

 NOTABLES

  • Emilie Gonzalez and Baudhuin each had five tech. falls which led the open.
  • Cassioppi had the fourth fastest tech. fall of the day at 25 seconds. 
  • Schmit had the fourth fastest pin at 19 seconds. 
  • The Hawkeyes went 83-30 on the day and scored 709 match points.
