COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 25 Maryland, 34-9, on Sunday afternoon at the Xfinity Center Pavillion.
The Hawkeyes won eight of 10 matches including five via bonus points. Iowa outscored Maryland 98-37 in match points.
“You never know what is going to happen after a bad performance,” said head coach Tom Brands. “You do credit them, because you don’t know. We had two wins the other night, today we had eight wins, but we want 10 wins. Neither is what you want. You want 10 weight classes, 10 wins.”
Joey Cruz got the Hawkeyes started with bonus points at 125 winning a 20-6 major decision over Tyler Garvin.
Maryland then took the lead at 133 with No. 11 Braxton Brown pinning Kale Petersen in 5:57.
