IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team upset No. 4 Southern California on Sunday afternoon inside a sold out Carver-Hawkeye arena. The Hawkeyes have won three straight conference matchups.
Senior Lucy Olsen recorded a new Hawkeye-best 28 points and added four rebounds and four assists to her stat line. Senior Addi O’Grady scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while senior Sydney Affolter finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Hawkeyes came out strong in the first quarter with junior Taylor McCabe sinking a three-pointer to start the Iowa scoring spark. Iowa went on a 15-0 run, holding the Trojans to just one point until the final 26 seconds of the quarter. Iowa held USC to their lowest-scoring quarter of the season, ending the quarter up 23-10.
McCabe hit her third three-pointer of the game at the start of the second quarter to bring the Hawkeyes up by as much as 19 points. However, the Trojans fought back to outscore the Hawkeyes 25-10 in the second. USC’s Juju Watkins gave the Trojans their first lead of the game, 29-28, after scoring a buzzer-beater layup to head into halftime with a quarter-high 15 points.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, featuring two ties and four lead changes. The Trojans managed to go up by as much as six points with three minutes left to play. However, the Hawkeyes responded with a 10-3 run, including a buzzer-beating jumper from Lucy Olsen, to regain the lead at 51-50 heading into the final ten minutes. Olsen scored a quarter-high eight points.
In the final quarter, Iowa sealed their victory with a strong finish, outscoring USC 25-19. With 1:48 to go, Iowa extended their lead to 10 points which was their biggest margin since the first quarter. Olsen was instrumental in this period, scoring 15 points and going 5-7 from the field to lead the Hawkeyes to their nationally ranked upset.
