Hawkeyes Travel to UCF to Open Spring Season

IOWA CITY, IOWA- The University of Iowa rowing team travels to Orlando, Fla. to open up the spring season with two days of scrimmages against the University of Central Florida on Feb. 7-8. With a young squad, the Hawkeyes look to continue to build on foundational skills along with race tactics.

FORMAT
The Hawkeyes will be taking four varsity boats, two eights and two fours. Friday afternoon will consist of 2,000-meter pieces at controlled stroke rates, increasing at 500-meter intervals. Saturday will feature multiple race style paces at different rates.

ABOUT
This will be the Hawkeyes third season traveling to UCF to train in the spring. Historically, Florida has marked the first outside row of the spring season. With the unseasonally high weather in Iowa City the past two weeks, the rowing team has been able to practice outside on the Iowa river in preparation. Florida allows for the team to get in multiple rows and lots of strokes that will help the team to prepare for the Sunshine State invite at the end of March.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH JEFF GARBUTT
“Florida will provide a growth moment for the team and allow both players and coaches to see areas for improvement and hone in on our race tactics. We have seen great effort from all parts of the roaster in the ways that they have been competitive with one another throughout off season training. We are excited to see what they can do when they line-up against another team for the first time.”
