2024-25 NEWS

  • Freshman Damaris Mutunga ran a 1:27.77 to win the 600 meters at the Meyo Invite, setting Iowa’s second-fastest time in school history. Mutunga is currently the top-ranked freshman in the event, ranking eighth nationally.
  • Freshman Abraham Vogelsang claimed the heptathlon title in at the Dr. McGuire Invite in Columbia, Missouri, scoring 5,882 points en route to Iowa’s third-best total in history. The freshman from Oslo, Norway, is second in the nation following his performance.
  • Sophomore Annie Wirth won the pentathlon with a personal best 3,890 points at the Dr. McGuire Invite. Wirth scored the sixth-most points in school history.
  • Freshman Pauline Bikembo and sophomore Maud Zeffou-Poaty climbed to third and fourth, respectively, on Iowa’s all-time list in the long jump.
  • In his collegiate debut, freshman Emmanjuel Njoku lept 7.66 meters to win the long jump at Mizzou and claiming Iowa’s sixth-longest jump.
  • The Hawkeyes won eight event titles and made three updates to the top-10 program list at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational between two days of competition.
  • Senior Lia Love claimed the 200 meter premier event title with a time of 24.04. In the 600-meter premier, senior Alli Bookin-Nosbisch crossed the line first in 1:28.78 securing first for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Miles Wilson led the men’s distance group in the 3,000 meters, breaking the tape in 8:21.25. Senior Alivia Bauer secured first in the women’s weight throw, winning with an 18.89-meter toss.
  • Lillian Harden climbed to sixth in the 60-meter hurdles record books with an 8.26 in the finals. Damaris Mutunga won the Jimmy Grant 400-meter premier in 53.15 to hold the Hawkeyes’ sixth-fastest time. Kai Graves-Blanks moved into sole possession of Iowa’s eighth-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event in 7.78.
  • Sophomore Ryan Johnson set a program and facility record with a 24.00-meter toss in the men's weight throw that ranked first nationally in his debut at the Hawkeye Invitational.
  • Returning All-American Daniela Wamokpego kicked off 2025 with a school record 13.32-meter mark in the triple jump.
  • The women's pentathlon was led by Bikembo at the Jimmy Grant Invite, who was the Hawkeyes' top finisher in every event with a final 4,229 points.  Sophomore Annie Wirth earned a personal record in the long jump (5.53 meters) and finished second on the day, claiming a personal record and sixth all-time ranking at Iowa.

LAST TIME OUT

Iowa concluded a stellar weekend of competition at the Meyo Invitational and Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational on Saturday. The Hawkeyes wrapped up the Meyo Invitational with three updates to the Iowa all-time list, five event titles and 15 personal bests. At the Dr. McGuire Invite, Iowa secured eight updates to the top-10 list and 12 personal bests over the weekend. The multi-event group highlighted the action in Missouri, with Annie Wirth and Abraham Vogelsang winning the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively. Pauline Bikembo (women’s long jump), Ryan Johnson (weight throw) and Emmanuel Njoku (men’s long jump) also collected victories. At the Meyo Invite, the Hawkeyes shined in the 600 meters, securing victories in both the men’s and women’s events. Damaris Mutunga claimed first place with an all-time best of 1:27.77, which ranks second at Iowa. Gabby Cortez also had an impressive day, setting a personal best of 1:28.40, which moves her into fifth on Iowa’s all-time list. On the men’s side, junior Terrick Johnson took gold with a time of 1:17.27.

IN THE RANKINGS

In the second USTFCCCA rankings of the 2025 indoor season, the Hawkeyes are ranked No. 23 in the men's poll. Regionally, the Iowa men are No. 2 in the Midwest, while the women are ranked No. 4. Iowa has 11 event groups ranked within the top 20 nationally, led by the men's weight throw and women's pentathlon, which hold the No. 1 ranking. The women's 400 meters, high jump and 60-meter hurdles are ranked in the top 10. The men's 400, 60 hurdles and long jump, along with the women's weight throw, long jump and 800 meters are also ranked among the top 20 event groups in the country.

MULTIS SHINE AT MIZZOU

The Hawkeyes picked up a pair of wins at the Dr. Rick McGuire Invite in Columbia, Missouri, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Annie Wirth controlled the women’s pentathlon, winning four of five events and securing a career-best 3,890 points. The Geneseo, Illinois, native moved to sixth in program history and currently ranks sixth in the conference. Freshman Jeanne Le Goff posted a personal best of 3,591 points. On the men’s side, Abraham Vogelsang put together a complete performance in the heptathlon to take the crown with 5,882 points. Vogelsang ranks second in Division I and is now third at Iowa all time. Sal Capaldo racked up 5,408 points on his way to a personal best and fifth-most points in school history.

HAWKEYES IN THE TOP 10

The Hawkeyes have four athletes ranked in the top 10 nationally. Abraham Vogelsang is the highest ranked Hawkeye (No. 2 - pentathlon). Ryan Johnson ranks third in the weight throw. In the women's 600 meters, Damaris Mutunga has the eighth-fastest time. The women's pentathlon top-10 list features freshman Pauline Bikembo at No. 6.

JOHNSON DOMINATES IN DEBUT

In his Hawkeye debut, sophomore Ryan Johnson set a program and facility record with a 24.00-meter throw. Johnson rose to the top of Iowa’s all-time list with his first throw of 23.57 meters. Johnson would better that mark twice more in his series. On his final throw, Johnson rocketed to the top of the national rankings. All six of Johnson’s throws surpassed the 22.75 mark. The performance updated his U20 world record.

B1G ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Two Hawkeyes earned B1G Athlete of the Week awards following their performances at the Hawkeye Invitational. Sophomore Ryan Johnson was awarded the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after securing a personal-best 24.00 meters to win the men’s weight throw. He rose to the top of Iowa’s all-time list in the event and is leading the nation with this mark. Johnson also improved his own U20 world record. Chioma Nwachukwu was named the Big Ten Women’s Freshman of the Week after her outstanding performance in the 400 meters. Nwachukwu sped to a 53.32 finish, claiming the Hawkeye Invitational event title and rising to seventh on Iowa’s all-time list. Nwachukwu is the fastest freshman in the event this season and currently ranks seventh nationally in the 400 meters. Three Hawkeyes earned B1G Athlete of the Week awards following their performances at the Jimmy Grant Alumni Invitational. Sean Smith won men’s field athlete of the week, Daniela Wamokpego was named co-field athlete of the week and Pauline Bikembo won freshman athlete of the week honors.
