CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – Continuing the trend of the past three years, The University of Iowa women’s rowing team set team-record finishes to close out the fall season at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Championship 4+ | Iowa finished sixth overall in a strong field that had the top four crews breaking the course record set by the Canadian National team in 2003. The Hawkeyes got an uncharacteristic slow start but asserted themselves in the middle of the 3-mile course to create a battle with Tennessee for fifth place. Iowa reached Harvard’s Weld a mere 0.1 seconds ahead of the Vols to take over fifth position, but the effort took its toll and Tennessee took over at the next interval at the Cambridge Boat Club to regain control of fifth place, crossing with a six-second advantage at the finish.

Championship 8+ | Iowa finished eighth among university entries in a field that boasted some of the best college teams in the nation, including four National Training Center crews from the US, Canada, and the Netherlands, and the “Great Eight” which was comprised of eight of the top rowers from around the world. Eight crews in the field broke the course record, set by the US National Team in 2007, with the Hawkeyes only nine seconds off the historic mark. Iowa got off to an uncharacteristically slow start, sitting with a nearly five-second deficit to Michigan and Princeton at the Riverside Boat Club split.  It took steady work over the middle section of the race to match the speed of those crews and a strong finish to shave that early deficit to less than four seconds at the finish.

HEAR FROM COACH CARTER
“I was pretty pleased with the results today.  Our crews raced pretty successfully against some elite collegiate competition.  That’s the most competitive we’ve been with many of those programs.  I think there were some lessons learned about getting off to a good start in a field like that.  There’s obviously no room for error when you’re racing the best.”

“Coming out of this regatta, I think we’re in a really good place as a team. The women prepared really well this fall and their training since has been terrific.  This team has taken tremendous strides in the past four years and we’re all motivated to keep the momentum we have.”
