Iowa Downs DePaul, 4-1, on Super Sunday

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team tallied its third victory of the season, downing DePaul, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

The victory improves Iowa’s record to 3-2 overall this season.

In doubles action, Iowa won the first match after a strong performance from Nikita Vishwase and Pia Kranholdt, who earned a 6-3 win at the No. 3 line. The match on court one was a tight contest with Tereza Dejnozkova and Barbora Pokorna falling to Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith, 6-4.

In the deciding match, Daianne Hayashida and Sally Xu fell to Eleanor Nobbs and Roberta Sechi, 7-5, giving DePaul a 1-0 lead heading into singles.  Xu was making her Hawkeye debut in the dual.

In singles play, No. 113 Hayashida quickly set the tone with a straight set 6-2, 6-2 win over Sasha Stula at No. 2. No. 76 Dejnozkova followed with a straight-set, 7-5, 6-1, win over Smith at No. 1 to give Iowa a 2-1 lead.

Senior Marisa Schmidt added another point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Eleanor Nobbs on court 3, and Pokorna clinched the win with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory over Goncharov at No. 4.  It was Pokorna’s team-leading fifth singles win this season (5-0 record) and her first win at the four line.

The matches at No. 5 and No. 6 were called before completion. Xu lost the first set against Isabella Gibson, 6-4, but was leading 5-2 in the second set. Kranholdt, after losing her first set 7-5, was leading 3-0 in the second when her match was also halted.
